DIY Faux Calligraphy

Yay (and Hello)!

I am very excited to share with you guys my current obsession and how YOU can get it at home! I cannot wait to start my calligraphy class and learn the real way to do this but in the meantime I have been using a "faux" technique to start practicing my own style and just because I really love writing and seeing the outcome!

Let's get started!

Need: blank canvas, permanent market, pencil, and inspiration!

So, you want to start by finding a quote or whatever you would wish to write... If you can find it in something that has already been written in calligraphy that would be great. If you are unable to find that then just grab some other writings in calligraphy to see how they write "k" or the "&" symbol. It really helps to see how people write these and how they decorate with the squiggly lines.

As I was writing I pulled inspiration from spindlephoto but then I really just went freehand. I have been practicing and looking at a lot of different calligraphy styles and designs so it was easier for me (and I don't expect that from all of you so I would just keep practicing/trying) :) !

Now you are going to create another line around some of the left letters to create a thicker look to them. You want to be very careful here.. again it is a thing that you really need to just look out for what parts of the letters are usually thicker. It tends to be the left side (but do not take my word!).

Here is my print with all of the added thicker lines.. you can (hopefully) see what needs to be thicker in each letter. This one has a lot of letters so hopefully that works!

Now we are going to use any kind of permanent marker that will work on canvas. I found a fabric marker that I hoped would work and it turned out well! I am sure you can use a Sharpie, too!

When tracing you really want to take your time... it is easy to get over confident and then mess up. Mine was getting a little unsteady because I was so nervous but some calligraphy is not usually very precise so that was OK. Make sure to take your time and give your hands a break if you need to :)

And now we are done and can enjoy the beautifulness! I might add some designs around the canvas with paints later but for now I am really loving this in its simplicity :)

I hope you enjoyed my project and try it yourself!
